Biography
As a devoted husband and father of one, Guy Mpoyi's personal life is a testament to his commitment to building strong, healthy relationships. Professionally, as a contractor for Maine Boys to Men since 2019, Guy has been a driving force in leading violence-prevention groups for immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking men in the Men Connect for New Mainers program.
His work, which delves into complex masculinity, healthy relationships, self-care, and identity issues, reflects his extensive experience in community-based work.
Additionally, Guy serves as a transportation leader for the Greater Portland Council of Government (GPCOG) 's Mobility for All campaign. In this role, Guy advocates for accessible transportation for the immigrant community and serves as a project advisory committee member for “Connect 2045.
Guy conceived and implemented a bus ambassador program. The Bus Ambassadors Program aims to help new riders with limited English proficiency in the Greater Portland region learn how to use the bus system. Bus Ambassadors are trained volunteers who speak French, Portuguese, Swahili, Lingala, Tshiluba, and English. The program connects interested community members to a Bus Ambassador who can provide support in their preferred language. The Bus Ambassador program is a collaborative effort between the Greater Portland Council of Governments and transit authorities in Portland and South Portland.
Notably, Guy has also served as a community garden assistant at Cultivating Community, where he played a crucial role in helping low-income individuals in the Portland area access free, fresh food. His work here underscores his dedication to addressing food accessibility issues. Additionally, Guy is part of the 2024 Natural Helpers program, a city of Portland, and the University of Southern Maine initiative to connect all immigrants to existing resources in Portland and Maine.
Guy Mpoyi is a senior human services counselor for the City of Portland. He works at the resettlement program with immigrants at Motel 6, Coscobay Hotel, and Howard Johnson. At the expo, he connected them to different resources like DHHS’s applications, WIC, houses, English courses, translation, Identifying resources and people who need assistance with additional languages, Interpretation at events and meetings, outreach, follow-ups, and training. He was promoted and has been a supervisor at 166 shelters since November 2023. They have served 179 guests.
Guy Mpoyi is a leader in various capacities. He serves as a PACTS Regional Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC) board member, an outreach case manager at Opportunity Alliance at the PATH program and crisis, and is currently running for the position of the next executive director of COCOMAINE. His unwavering dedication to his roles inspires confidence in his abilities and reassures the community of his commitment.
